Why do we get nervous to get in front of the camera?
As a woman that grew up (mostly) in the 90s, I can remember when Britney Spears was shamed for being “fat” and she was clearly a size 4, maybe a 6. I absolutely had a bigger body than she did at age 12, and I can remember thinking, “does this mean I’m fat too?”
Then, cue all of the teenage and early 20 year old women in the media that had stick figures for bodies, thin arms, wore low-rise jeans without a “muffin top”, and THIS was the standard of beauty that I was told I had to live up to. It was unattainable without spiraling into an unhealthy relationship with food and talking negatively to myself daily. Well… you can’t hate your body into loving it. The comparison game is the thief of all joy.
As social media began to take over the world and women began to have more of a voice, we have learned that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Victoria’s Secret now has models that are a size 18. Stores are becoming more inclusive with sizing, and there are many stores out there that only cater towards women that are size 14 and up.
So why do we still get nervous to see out images?
I’m not a psychologist, I’m just a boudoir photographer in Pittsburgh, but I think it’s because it’s been ingrained in our minds since we were young that few still need to look a certian way or be a certain size, but that’s not true. You are so used to seeing yourself in the mirror from one angle, and you also have not seen yourself from the angles that you can be professionally posed in.
A recent client that I had in the studio was extremely nervous for her session. After she went home that night, she left me a Google review, and it read “When I first arrived to my session, I was very very nervous. However, all throughout the day I was becoming more and more comfortable. The posed coaching really made it easy for me too. I was hesitant during the session on how the photos would turn out. But, when I had the image reveal, I was stunned speechless. I couldn’t believe it was me! I highly recommend everyone doing this!”
You are perfect the way you are, and you deserve to see yourself in a way that will make you blow your own mind.
